Abstract

This paper presents a study on the effect of the ratio of biodiesel on performance and emissions of diesel engines. Research engine is a cylinder engine AVL-5402 simulated by software AVL-Boost. Simulated fuel includes fossil diesel and biodiesel blended with the replacement rate from 0% to 50% (B0, B10, B20, B30, B40, B50) at 1400 rev/min (speed for maximum torque) and at 25%, 50% and 75% load. Parameters evaluated include combustion characteristics, power, fuel consumption and emissions based on the biodiesel blend ratio. Results show that as the biodiesel blend ratio increases, peak pressure and heat release rate decrease while peak temperature increases; engine power tends to decrease and fuel consumption increases. Emissions of CO and soot decrease, while NOₓ increases.
